When I saw this image I was very excited to write an essay on it. I find Banksy's "Mobile Lovers" to be a complex and thought-provoking image. While many consider his work to be vandalism, it could be assumed that Banksy's most vigorous opponents dislike having the truth of our dysfunctional society thrust before them. I particularly enjoy this image because of the statement it makes on how technology is affecting our relationships, and it can be translated in both a positive and negative manner. Positively, it brings together those who might not have met otherwise or those couples who, for various reasons such as school or work, must be separated by distance for long periods of times, as is my personal experience. Without today's technology, it would be much more difficult to communicate with my fiancé, who lives 200 miles away. We stay in contact through the use of such modern technology as Skype, Facebook, texting, calling, and face-timing. However, technology can also negatively affect relationships by consequently creating distance between people and crippling our ability to socialize without the use of computers and cell phones. This was a very interesting controversy to pursue and I really enjoyed writing the essay.
